Irish American group commemorates 175th anniversary of first report of Ireland’s potato blight

AMERICA’S OLDEST and largest Irish Catholic Organisation has commemorated the 175th anniversary of first report of Ireland’s potato blight. September 13, 1845, marked the date when British publication The Gardner’s Journal gravely announced: “We stop the Press with very great regret to announce that the potato murrain [blight] has unequivocally declared itself in Ireland.” A significant announcement in Irish history, the date is considered the precursor to An Gorta Mor or the “Great Hunger.” Over the next five years, over two million people died in Ireland from starvation. Unfortunately, many Irish and Irish American communities have found themselves fighting against another blight, COVID-19, nearly two centuries on. In a bid to ensure the date did not go unrecognised, the Ancient Order of Hibernians produced a special video commemorating…

Health Care Assistants thankful for bursary support - Campus Life

Twenty-three-year-old Shoshanna Fremont works the night shift as a Care Aide at a local long-term care home, a shift she loves as it gives her an opportunity to provide precious one-on-one time with residents who are up during the night. “When you get them a glass of water and take the time to hold their hand, especially when they can’t have many visitors, their entire mood changes,” says Fremont. “When I go home I take comfort that I took care of people today, I made them smile, or helped in whatever way I could.” Fremont is one of eight students who have benefitted from a new bursary at Okanagan College that pays nearly the full tuition to become a Health Care Assistant (HCA). Set up by the BC Care Providers Association, the bursary aims to encourage and support people becoming a HCA, which is an in-demand profession across the province. Fremont says the award was a lifesaver, as she underestimated how difficult school would be, and the challenge of paying for living costs in addition to her education. “The…

Over 80% of doctors in Northern Ireland believe second-wave of coronavirus is on its way

MORE than eight in 10 Northern Irish doctors think that a second wave of Covid-19 is likely to happen in the next six months. Around 50% of those admitted that it was their greatest fear for the health service, in a recent survey. "Our members, who have worked throughout the last six months either on the wards, in practices, in the community or remotely, are rightly worried that we have not been able to get this disease under control." More than half of BMA doctors (57%) stressed that confusing messages regarding public health measures, including advice on mask-wearing and social interactions, as well as a general lack of consistent…
